Speech-Language Therapy

A Speech-Language Therapy Consultation is the first step where a Speech-Language Therapist (SLT) meets with the client (child/adult) and/or their family to assess, discuss, and plan treatment for speech, language, communication, or swallowing difficulties.

How to identify Speech-Language Problems

Identifying speech-language problems involves observing a person’s ability to understand, express, and produce language clearly. In children, signs include delayed first words, using gestures instead of words, limited vocabulary, unclear pronunciation, difficulty forming sentences, trouble understanding instructions, and poor social communication like avoiding eye contact or not responding. Fluency issues, such as stuttering, and unusual voice qualities like hoarseness or high/low pitch can also indicate a problem. In adults, speech-language problems can appear after stroke, brain injury, or illness. Signs include slurred speech, difficulty finding words, trouble understanding spoken or written language, speaking in short or broken sentences, voice changes, and difficulty swallowing. Red flags that require professional attention include not speaking by age 2, unclear speech by age 4–5, sudden loss of speech, worsening stuttering, persistent hoarseness, or communication difficulties affecting daily life. Early identification is essential because timely intervention by a Speech-Language Therapist can significantly improve communication skills and overall quality of life.
